History & Significance

After Hastings, William systematically ravaged southern England to force submission. Various skirmishes occurred as Norman columns spread out from the battle site. The circuit of devastation through Kent, Surrey, Hampshire and back to London — documented by the Carmen de Hastingae Proelio — included numerous smaller engagements that compelled English submission town by town.
