The Battle

History & Significance

When Dauphin Louis invaded England in 1216, Winchester — the ancient capital — was taken by the French forces. Only Winchester Castle continued to hold for King John. The capture of Winchester showed the near-total collapse of Plantagenet authority in southern England following the baronial rebellion. After John's death and the rise of the regency under William Marshal, the tide gradually turned and Louis's supporters drifted away.
