History & Significance

Trimontium near Melrose was the most important Roman fort north of Hadrian's Wall. Archaeological evidence of burning and deliberate destruction in the late Antonine period suggests a violent attack by Caledonian tribes during one of the periods of withdrawal. Deposits of military equipment suggest hasty departure or destruction before abandonment.
