History & Significance

Cromwell's cavalry won a notable victory at Gainsborough, killing the young Royalist commander Charles Cavendish. However the town was eventually relieved by a larger Royalist force and Parliament withdrew. An early demonstration of Cromwell's ability to keep his cavalry under control after a charge — unlike most Civil War cavalry commanders.
