History & Significance

The Northern Rising of 1569 was the last serious attempt by the old Catholic northern nobility to resist Tudor Protestant power. The Earls raised substantial forces and swept through Northumberland, but lost their nerve as the royal army under Lord Clinton approached. The Earl of Northumberland eventually fled to Scotland where he was later sold back to England and executed
