History & Significance

The establishment of the legionary fortress of Isca Silurum (Caerleon) in 74-75 AD by Julius Frontinus marked the final military subjugation of the Silures. Legio II Augusta was based here for nearly three centuries. The fortress covered 50 acres and housed 5,500 legionaries. Its amphitheatre, barracks and baths are among the best-preserved Roman military remains in Britain. Geoffrey of Monmouth later identified Caerleon as Camelot — King Arthur's court.
