The Battle

History & Significance

Kenneth mac Alpin transferred St Columba's relics from Iona to Dunkeld in 849, making Dunkeld the new ecclesiastical capital of the emerging Kingdom of Alba. The reason was Viking devastation — Iona had been sacked multiple times and was no longer safe. Norse raiding parties threatened the routes through the Lowlands. The ecclesiastical reorganisation of Scotland under Viking pressure reshaped the religious geography of the Lowlands permanently.
