The Battle

History & Significance

Deal Castle, one of Henry VIII coastal artillery forts, was seized by Royalist sympathisers during the Second Civil War rising in Kent in 1648, supported by the mutinous Parliamentary fleet under Vice-Admiral William Batten. Parliamentary forces besieged the Downs castles while Warwick regained control of the fleet, leaving the garrisons without naval support.
