The Battle

History & Significance

Norse fleets operating from Dublin and the Irish Sea repeatedly raided the north Welsh coast in the mid-ninth century. The monastery of Bangor was particularly vulnerable. These raids preceded Rhodri Mawr's famous victory over the Danes at Anglesey in 856. The chronic Viking threat forced the Welsh kingdoms to develop coastal defences and contributed to the importance of Rhodri Mawr's victory in Welsh historical memory.
