The Battle

History & Significance

Norse raiders attacked the monastic community at Columban foundation on Skye in the mid-ninth century. Skye was too large and inhabited for complete Norse occupation but sustained raiding disrupted Gaelic ecclesiastical life on the island and began the process of Norse infiltration that created the mixed Norse-Gaelic culture of Skye in the tenth and eleventh centuries.
