The Battle

History & Significance

Thomas Percy, 7th Earl of Northumberland, led the Rising of the Northern Earls in 1569. When it collapsed, he fled to Scotland where he was sheltered by the Hepburns. In 1572 the Scottish regent Morton sold him back to England for the price of 2,000 pounds. He was executed at York. His forfeiture ended the Percy earldom's unbroken military dominance of Northumberland. The suppression of the northern earls marked the final end of the great medieval northern dynasties' independent power.
