History & Significance

Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Hertford and lord of Glamorgan, conducted campaigns to extend Norman control in the upland districts of Glamorgan in the late 1150s. The fertile Vale of Glamorgan was under firm Norman control but the hill country above it remained Welsh. De Clare pushed the frontier of Norman Glamorgan northward into the Welsh commotes of the uplands, building castles to hold his gains.
