The Battle

History & Significance

In the campaign season before Mons Graupius, Agricola systematically devastated Strathmore — the fertile valley between the Highland massif and the Sidlaw Hills. The destruction of crops and settlements was designed to force the Caledonians into the set-piece battle that Roman tactics would favour. The Roman forts at Cardean, Stracathro, and Inchtuthil represent the infrastructure of this advance.
