Carse Grey is an Iron Age settlement and souterrains situated in Angus, Scotland, approximately 600 metres south-west of the settlement it neighbours. The site comprises underground stone-built chambers, or souterrains, which are characteristic of Iron Age settlements in eastern Scotland and the Picts' later occupation. These subterranean structures served practical purposes including storage and refuge, their cool, stable environment ideal for preserving foodstuffs in a northern climate.
The settlement sits upon bedrock of the Arbuthnott-Garvock Group, a geological formation dominated by sandstone with subordinate conglomerate, siltstone and mudstone deposits laid down during the Pragian period of the Devonian. This local stone would have provided the primary building material for both the surface settlement structures and the carefully constructed souterrain passages and chambers.
