History & Significance

After Glenfruin, the MacGregor chief Alasdair of Glenstrae was hunted down. He surrendered to the Earl of Argyll who promised to escort him safely to England — but instead delivered him to justice in Edinburgh. He was hanged with eleven of his men. The betrayal by Argyll was noted even by contemporaries who wanted the MacGregors punished. The proscription of the clan name followed shortly after.
