After Alfred blocked their fleet on the Lea, the Danish land army marched across England to Bridgnorth on the Severn, where they wintered in 895-896. In the following year the army dispersed: some settled in Northumbria, some in East Anglia, and the most destitute sailed back to Francia. The Chronicle records that this effectively ended the long campaign of 893-896, the final major Danish assault of Alfred reign.
