History & Significance

Lindsey in Lincolnshire was fought over repeatedly between Northumbria and Mercia in the later seventh century. After Wulfhere died and Æthelred took Mercia, Lindsey passed between the two kingdoms multiple times. Ecgfrith briefly held it but after the Trent battle in 679 it reverted to Mercian control permanently.
