History & Significance

After the destruction of the Northumbrian army the Danes installed Ecgberht as a puppet king north of the Tyne, ruling the rump of English Northumbria on Danish terms. Ecgberht reigned under Danish overlordship until 872 when the Northumbrians revolted and expelled both him and his archbishop. The puppet kingdom illustrated Danish political strategy.
