Wyatt with a remnant of his rebel force reached Threadneedle Street in the heart of the City of London on 7 February 1554 before being persuaded to turn back to the west. The penetration so deep into London alarmed the court at Whitehall but also demonstrated that Wyatt had no real force left with which to exploit the moment. Queen Mary memorably refused to flee, giving her famous speech at the Guildhall nearby.
