Parliamentary forces holding Nottingham Castle repulsed a Royalist attempt to seize the outer town in late 1643. Governor John Hutchinson organised the garrison into an offensive posture and cavalry sorties from the castle regularly clashed with Royalist forces attempting to set up a formal investment. The castle served as the anchor of Parliamentary control in the Trent valley.
