History & Significance

Beverley was one of the earliest and most enthusiastic centres of the Pilgrimage of Grace. The East Riding rose quickly when news arrived of the rebellion in Lincolnshire. The Beverley muster was among the largest in Yorkshire, contributing thousands to the Pilgrim host. The rebels' religious grievances — opposition to the dissolution of the monasteries and evangelical religious changes — found strong expression in Beverley with its ancient minster.
