Turnham Green was perhaps the most strategically significant engagement of the entire Civil War. Outraged by Brentford, the London Trained Bands turned out en masse — the Parliamentary army numbered 24,000, far larger than the Royalist force. Charles I faced the London lines and withdrew without attacking. This was the moment the Royalists lost their best chance to take London and win the war quickly. Charles retreated to Oxford and the war became a prolonged conflict Parliament was structurally better placed to win.
