The Battle

History & Significance

In the same 1010 campaign that culminated in the disaster at Ringmere, the Danish army sacked Ipswich. The Danes overran Suffolk before the battle of Ringmere, suggesting Ipswich fell before the main engagement. After Ringmere the Danes ravaged freely across East Anglia and into the Midlands. Ipswich as the main port of East Anglia was a particular target and suffered repeated Danish attacks throughout the Second Viking Age.
