History & Significance

The rivalry between MacLeans and MacDonalds in Mull waters was expressed through galley warfare as well as land combat. The MacLeans of Duart maintained effective sea control of the Sound of Mull and the approaches to Loch Scridain through their fleet of birlinns. MacDonald attempts to penetrate this sea-space were regularly defeated. Control of the sound determined access to the fishing and trade of the western sea lanes.
