History & Significance

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that the ealdormen of Somerset and Dorset fought the Danes at the mouth of the Parrett and won. This rare English victory in the raiding period showed that when local leaders coordinated and caught Viking forces at river mouths — before they dispersed — the English could win. It prefigured Alfred's later strategic thinking about controlling waterways.
