The Battle

History & Significance

The Marian cavalry — largely Hamilton men — attempted to support the pike advance up the lane at Langside. When the pike advance stalled under arquebusier fire, the Hamilton cavalry tried to outflank Moray's position around the houses of the village. They were met by Moray's cavalry reserve and the confined ground prevented them from deploying effectively. The failure of the Hamilton horse sealed the Marian defeat. Several Hamilton leaders were captured in the pursuit.
