The Northern Rising — the last major armed rising of the old Catholic north — brought Yorkshire into play again. The Earls of Northumberland and Westmorland raised their forces and marched through Yorkshire, hearing Mass and displaying the banner of the Five Wounds of Christ (same symbol as the Pilgrimage). They dissolved when a royal army approached. Northumberland was executed in York in 1572; Westmorland died in exile. 700 rebels were hanged across the north.
