History & Significance

Wiglaf of Mercia recovered the kingdom from Egbert's brief overlordship in 830 and re-established Mercian independence. The rapid recovery showed that Egbert's dominance was more nominal than real. Wiglaf's restoration owed something to Northumbrian non-cooperation with Egbert and the logistical difficulties of maintaining control over distant kingdoms.
