The Battle

History & Significance

The Northumbrians revolted against the Danish-installed puppet king Ecgberht and expelled both him and Archbishop Wulfhere from York in 872. The Danes reacted by establishing their own direct control over Northumbria. The revolt was quickly suppressed but shows residual Northumbrian resistance even after 867.
