The Battle

History & Significance

In the months before and after Moray's murder at Donibristle, the Earl of Huntly conducted a series of aggressive operations from his seat at Strathbogie Castle in Aberdeenshire, asserting Gordon dominance over northeastern Scotland. Government commissioners sent to restrain Huntly were ignored. Huntly raised Gordon tenantry and drove off government forces attempting to enforce warrants against him, demonstrating that in the northeast the Crown's writ ran only as far as Huntly permitted. These operations laid the groundwork for the Catholic earls' crisis of 1594.
