When Charles I dissolved the Short Parliament in May 1640 after it refused to vote supply before grievances were addressed, London erupted in rioting. Crowds attacked Lambeth Palace, Archbishop Lauds residence, and there were demonstrations in the streets against the bishops. The London riots of May 1640 were a sign of the popular radicalism building in the capital and contributed to the crisis that led directly to the Long Parliament.
