The Battle

History & Significance

Edwin of Northumbria conquered Elmet — a small British kingdom in west Yorkshire that had survived as the last remnant of the old Brigantian territory. Ceretic was expelled and Elmet absorbed into Northumbria. This eliminated the last coherent British kingdom in what is now England north of the Humber and firmly established that Northumbria would be an English kingdom from coast to coast.
