History & Significance

After the disaster at Methven, Bruce conducted guerrilla operations in the Grampian glens. This ambush near Gairnside in Aberdeenshire was one of a series of hit-and-run attacks designed to harass the English and prevent them from claiming that Scotland was pacified. Bruce's survival through the winter of 1306-7 in the Highland glens and islands is one of the most dramatic episodes in Scottish history.
