History & Significance

Norse fleets used Strangford Lough as a base for raiding inland Ulster. The longphort model — a defended harbour-camp — allowed Vikings to overwinter in Ireland rather than return home, fundamentally changing the nature of the raids.

Forces Involved

Norse: c. 500-1,500 raiders (5-15 ships). Dál Fiatach: c. 500-2,000 local defenders.
