History & Significance

The Babington Plot was Walsinghams masterpiece of counter-intelligence. He allowed the conspiracy — to assassinate Elizabeth and place Mary on the throne with Spanish support — to develop, intercepting communications through the Chartley barrel cipher. The arrests of Babington and his fourteen co-conspirators across London and the midlands led to their execution and provided the legal basis for Marys trial and beheading in 1587.
