History & Significance

Elgin in Moray was in contested territory during the 1715 rising. Northeast Scotland north of the Highland line was broadly Jacobite but the coastal plain of Moray contained Presbyterian communities and pro-government sentiment among the merchant and professional classes. Jacobite forces operating from the Huntly Gordon country penetrated as far as Elgin, seeking to control the northeast coast and prevent government forces using it as a supply line. Minor confrontations occurred with pro-government Elgin citizens. The town's cathedral town status and Bishop's seat gave it a connection to the Episcopal tradition, some of whose adherents were Jacobite sympathisers.
