History & Significance

Macbeth's long border with the Norse earldom of Orkney -- whose earls at this time controlled Caithness and Sutherland on the Scottish mainland -- required constant military attention. Thorfinn the Mighty, the powerful Earl of Orkney, was at the height of his power in the 1040s. Macbeth appears to have maintained an armed frontier against Norse encroachment in the far north, with occasional skirmishes along the Moray Firth coast.
