The Battle

History & Significance

Edward I marched as far north as Elgin in the summer of 1296, demonstrating the full extent of his conquest. Scottish submissions were received at Elgin Cathedral and the castle garrisoned. The occupation of Elgin — so deep into the Scottish north — showed the completeness of Edwards initial conquest. It also showed its superficiality: northern garrisons could not be supplied or reinforced and fell away rapidly when Murrays rising began in 1297.

Forces Involved

Edward Is army; no resistance in the north
