History & Significance

On becoming king, Eadred received the submission of all Northumbria at Tanshelf (near Pontefract), including a pledge from Archbishop Wulfstan of York. The oath-swearing was genuine enough at the time but Northumbria broke it within a year by accepting Eirik Bloodaxe as king. Archbishop Wulfstan role as intermediary between Norse York and the English crown was complex: he was later imprisoned by Eadred for complicity with the Norse.
