The Battle

History & Significance

The royal army sent to suppress Kett's rebellion was led by the Marquess of Northampton — a courtier with no battlefield experience. After initially entering Norwich, his force was driven out in fierce street fighting. Lord Sheffield was pulled from his horse and killed despite offering a ransom. The defeat humiliated the government and forced them to send a professional army under Warwick.
