History & Significance

One of the bloodiest clan battles in Scottish history, fought on the beach and sands at Loch Gruinart in Islay. The MacDonalds and MacLeans had feuded for generations over Rhinns of Islay. Lachlan Mór MacDonald was killed along with most of his men. The MacLean victory was short-lived — his heir soon massacred the MacLeans in return.
