In 1644 Royalist forces in Montgomeryshire conducted aggressive operations against Parliamentary outposts in the region before the decisive Battle of Montgomery in September. Several skirmishes occurred near Kerry and Newtown as Royalists sought to extend their control of the mid-Wales border zone. These operations were the prelude to the Royalist strategic failure at Montgomery.
