History & Significance

David II had been in France since 1334, sent there as a child for safety as Scotland suffered its worst military reverses since 1296. He returned in June 1341, aged seventeen. His return coincided with the Scottish recovery of Edinburgh Castle and marked the end of the worst phase of the Second War of Independence. David immediately began military operations to consolidate Scottish control. His return gave the Scottish cause legitimate royal leadership for the first time in seven years.
