History & Significance

The first of three sieges of Pontefract Castle. The strong medieval fortress resisted for over a year. Its Royalist garrison was among the most determined defenders in the north; after this surrender the castle was soon re-garrisoned by Royalists who held it through two more sieges until 1649.
