Dartmouth Castle, originally built in the 1380s after repeated French raids, was reinforced in 1539 as part of Henry VIII comprehensive review of coastal defences. Its position commanding the mouth of the Dart estuary made it one of the most strategically placed fortifications in the West Country. The 1539 muster added new artillery to complement the existing medieval tower and ensured Dartmouth harbour was properly defended against any French or Spanish approach.
