The Battle

History & Significance

A Hebridean Norse fleet struck the Galloway coast in 997 as part of the general pattern of Norse-Gaelic raiding around the Irish Sea littoral. Galloway with its Norse-Gaelic mixed population was both a target and a provider of recruits for the raiding fleets. The 997 raid on Galloway preceded the 1000 Ayrshire raids and was part of the wider Norse maritime dominance of the western sea approaches to Scotland.
