The Battle

History & Significance

Four Spanish galleys under Don Carlos de Amezola landed soldiers at Mousehole and Newlyn in Cornwall, burning both villages. It was the only enemy military landing on English soil during the entire Elizabethan period. The raid provoked outrage and accelerated Elizabethan coastal fortification.
