History & Significance

Vespasian sent his old comrade Petilius Cerialis as governor specifically to crush Brigantia. Cerialis advanced the Ninth Legion from York northward through the Vale of York with aggressive momentum. Tacitus records that Cerialis engaged in frequent battles and took a large part of Brigantia. The advance to the River Swale was a key phase pinning the Brigantians against their Stanwick fortress.
