Parliamentary cavalry under Colonel Horton probed the Welsh Royalist advance guard near Cowbridge in the days before the Battle of St Fagans. A skirmish between Parliamentary horsemen and the Royalist advance guard gave Horton intelligence of the Welsh force strength and position. Horton used this information to select his ground for the decisive engagement at St Fagans.
