The Battle

History & Significance

Parliamentary forces under the Earl of Manchester besieged Lincoln in May 1644 following Winceby. The city on its limestone ridge was defended by Royalists in the lower town and cathedral area. Manchester stormed the city on 6 May 1644, the garrison retreating to the castle which held briefly before surrendering. The fall of Lincoln completed Parliamentary dominance in Lincolnshire.
